Photographs, films, and writing made outside of any brief. Some of it eventually finds its way into the work. Most of it does not, and does not need to.

I keep it here because this is where the instincts get formed. I have never been able to separate the way I look at things from the way I work, and it seemed dishonest to show one without the other.

PHOTOGRAPHY

I take pictures to understand what I am looking at.

I take pictures to understand what I am looking at.

Something stops me before I know why. A shape, a shadow, the way two things line up for a moment. I take the picture first and work out the reason later, if I work it out at all.

Most of what I keep is ordinary. The frame is the only real decision, and I am still learning how to make it well.

FILM

Filming is the easy part. The edit is where it becomes something.

Filming is the easy part. The edit is where it becomes something.

I usually shoot without much of a plan, then sit with the footage until an order appears. How long to hold a shot. Where to cut. What to leave silent.

That part takes far longer than the runtime suggests, and it is the part I keep coming back for. Most of these began as something I did not understand yet.

WRITING

I write to find the end of a thought.

I write to find the end of a thought.

I make a lot of images and reach very few conclusions. Writing is where I go when something will not resolve on its own.

Some of it is about craft. Some of it is about a place, a week, or something I read that stayed longer than it should have. I would like to do more of it, and that is mostly why this page exists.

NOTICE FIRST. UNDERSTAND LATER.

01

Notice before understanding

I rarely know why something has caught me at the time. The picture, the shot, or the sentence comes first, and the reason arrives later. Waiting for the reason usually means missing the thing.

02

Keep something unfinished

Client work has to arrive somewhere. This does not. A roll I have not developed, an edit I have left alone for a year, a draft that is still wrong: those tend to be where I learn the most.

03

Make things with no use

Not everything needs a purpose to be worth the time. A lot of what I now do professionally started as something I made for no reason at all.

04

Let it return to the work

I do not treat this as separate. The way I frame a photograph is the way I frame a brand film. The habits formed here are the ones I bring to everything else.

If you got this far, then you probably weren’t looking for a portfolio.

That’s the best thing about this page. The people who read all the way down tend to be reading for the same reason I made it. I don’t have a newsletter for any of this, and I’m not planning one.

If something here landed, tell me which one. That’s usually a better conversation than anything on the work page.
